The town is home to 16,500 inhabitants, half of whom live in rural areas.

It has a good multicultural tradition. Nova Varoš lies on the route from Belgrade to Montenegro and it is situated beneath the Zlatar mountain at an altitude of about 1,000 meters.

Even though it is an urban area, its location is more than special having in mind that Zlatar is only a few minutes away, while all the lakes can easily be reached. History buffs can enjoy visiting a couple of 19th-century buildings, along with the National Museum that occupies one of them.

Nova Varoš firstly emerged around the 16th century when a few facilities were built to secure merchant caravans on the road from Constantinople.
