Mokra Gora

Nostalgia attracting the world

Mokra Gora
''Please get on the train, we are leaving'', a carman wearing an ancient uniform addresses the passengers at the first station of the narrow gauge railway, wherefrom ”Ćira“ – the museum train – starts its journey along the mountain slopes. The train gets packed with tourists from Japan, Germany, Russia, Switzerland and all over the world in a blink of the eye. As soon as the engine has clattered, everybody is smiling. Such sceneries – crystal clear waterways and profuse springs, beautiful resting places in the hills surrounded by evergreen, the route of the miraculous railway resembling the form of number eight – always excite visitors and bring them back again and again.

This is Mokra Gora and the ride on the museum railway ”Nostalgia“ which passes over the steep sides of Šargan and Rzav Canyon all the way to the Drina. This is the unique attraction in the region, the narrow gauge railway of beauty and pleasure. The restless ”Ćira“ of Mokra Gora travels through the mountain and the valley, strictly according to the schedule, and its ancient yet well furnished carriages are always full of museum railway lovers. Driving over the “Šargan eight”, ”Ćira“ conquers 300 meters of latitude, crosses over 10 bridges and passes through 22 tunnels, a total of 15.5 km in one direction. Between Mokra Gora and Višegrad, there is a section about twenty kilometers long, with nine tunnels and 12 bridges, where ”Ćira“ crosses the state border and comes down near the bridge on the Drina.

Apart from the railway, Emir Kusturica’s Drvengrad contributes to the magic of this place. It is a traditional and highly comfortable settlement located on the Mećavnik hill. All you can see in this wooden town is interesting and unusual, just like Kusturica’s movies: from top artistic contents, accommodation for the most demanding visitors, swimming pool, ski resorts and sport courts to national buildings, grandma’s kitchen dishes and the conservation of the living tradition of this place.
