National Museum

The museum is founded in 1946 in order to collect, inspect and preserve cultural and historical valuable objects of the area. It is now home to tens of thousands various artefacts and documents.

There are two permanent museum exhibitions to be visited – one about the uprising in 1941 when the so-called Užice Republic was proclaimed, and the other about the history of the area from the earliest period.

Visitors can also see the art legacy part of the museum dedicated to painter Mihailo Milovanović.

The interesting fact is that during WWII the Partisan headquarters was situated in the museum building, while their production of arms and ammunition occupied the nearby basements.
